Am I strong enough to compete at the level I want to play

Here is an example of what i see every year during pre season with the senior team i work for and lived through when i was 18.

Kid comes from NPL junior system with years and years of playing experience to try and crack senior football either in the NPL or lower leagues. Naturally they have been able to manage playing junior football relatively easy as their body is big enough and strong enough to deal with the challenges they face.

In the first year of making the step up to senior level they start getting injuries, Most likely hamstring, groin or quad then and are stuck scratching their head at the end of the season why they only played half of the seasons games.

I hate seeing any athlete injured, i know how frustrating it is to watch your team from the sidelines.

The reason 95% of this age group are getting injured is because they have not been exposed to strength and conditioning to complement their football and have only been playing or training for football 4-6 days a week for the past 5 years. As a result the main lower limb muscles get overused and when you increase the intensity of training at senior levels the muscle simply cant cope with the added stress so an injury occurs.

How can you limit the likeliness of injury ?

It's relatively simple, A long and strong muscle is less likely to get injured. Starting strength training that compliments your football as early as possible is the best way to accomplish this. Whether you are 12 or 22 starting now with basic exercises will drastically improve your ability to stay on the pitch and play football.
